What seats are up for election?
Districts 1, 2 and 5 have elections this year.
Who should I vote for?
Not Gene Trent, Megan Wright or Tammy Dennis
Why not?
All three are endorsed by Moms For Liberty. If you care at all about public education, this should be all you need to know.
Tammy Dennis
Tammy is inexperienced and awful, and running against two seasoned educators and strong advocates for students and teachers. Michele McCormack has the most relevant experience fighting at the local and state level for education, but Cecilia Trotter would also be a monumentally better choice than Tammy.
Gene Trent
A few highlights:
- Lied about his arrest record, rendering him ineligible for district employment at the time he was installed on the board.
- Once tried to remove an unvetted list of hundreds of books from all school libraries with no semblance of review.
- Appointed Moms For Liberty’s top book banner to review her own challenges, while calling the presence of media specialists on the same committee a “conflict of interest”.
- Grumbled during a meeting that he “f***ing hate[s] transparency” (which is, at least honest)
- Despite promising to “fight” to keep schools open during his first campaign, he stood by as Cape View Elementary was closing – refusing to attend town halls with parents and students – and in fact voted to close the school.
Megan Wright
- Voted to remove a G-rated book because it wasn’t read from “left to right, bottom to top” (also: implied the existence of gay people)
- Voted to remove the book “The Nowhere Girls” over the unanimous recommendation of the committee, promising to somehow find a perfect replacement. She’s never mentioned this since.
- Promoted Ron DeSantis’s autobiography as part of Literacy Month, while DeSantis continued to crack down on open, real public education.
